pure

Something about this just excites me. I would love to spend time in this world. Maybe, it's like the pyramids, it's good to see just once.

Nature Immunology is interesting and when did my school finally get an online subscription!

New NKT cells! Warning for those who don't work in this area. This guy's career just got made and he's only a post-doc!

computers

So this weekend, my new HP Tablet that hasn't been working for a year started back up again. Weirdly, continuing to restart the computer does resolve problems. Anyways, in celebration, my favorite haiku error messages from this site:

Three things are certain:
Death, taxes, and lost data.
Guess which has occurred.

Windows 2K crashed.
I am the Blue Screen of Death.
No one hears your screams. (tell me nobody else has screamed for W2K!)

Errors have occurred.
We won't tell you where or why.
Lazy programmers.

strange

For everyone who thinks to put their data in xml instead of a proprietary data format, I thank you. However, why would you put the schema in a xml file while leaving everything else in text files?

For those who want to know what exactly is going on in the South China Seas, is China imperialistic?

Wow. Who else wonders how much of this activity will affect the American economy? I mean the American economy has been the only sustainable brake on the Chinese economy.

Something to be said about laying our actions to our words and values.

Wikipedia trivia: if you take any article, click on the first link in the article text not in parentheses or italics, and then repeat, you will eventually end up at "Philosophy".

Are we a generation that relies on Wikipedia too much?

Somebody has been watching too many TNG reruns.

Bernanke isn't shiny or flashy but he is consistent about his message. He must know that he will become political fodder.

incomplete

I hate it when I can't tell who wrote an article. Economist has a blurb today about the 30th anniversary of AIDS. Their charts reflect what is rather than the huge increases of AIDS cases in areas like SE Asia in recent years. It is safe to say billions have been spent on this disease yet this virus which only contains nine genes has confounded scientists' attempts to stop its replication and transmission completely for thirty years.

For those who don't read their AAAS policy alerts, a link to a critique of NSF (pdf) was in today's email.

Love Economist's daily chart today. Who else thinks that Swiss men think higher of themselves than other European men?

hooha

I came across the news yesterday about XMRV, the continuing debate. The authors still will not publish a retraction. It made me wonder about other famous retractions. Isn't this what peer review is all about?
