code
I've gone back to Python and reviewing BioPython this morning. My first initial reaction to BioPython is a little disappointment. It's good with basics such as parsing but nothing that DNAstar doesn't do and it has a gui. Maybe, as I get deeper, my opinion will change. I did come across Google's Summer of Code.
Is this Teach Parents Tech for real? Because, I could use one to teach my parents to change languages on a DVD menu. Like, teaching them how to use the Internet on PS3 wasn't enough.
A little worried about traveling during the holiday season due to weather?

net
What happened to the promise that Internet service would become faster and cheaper? I'm still waiting as I painfully pay for AT&T (Bellsouth's) DSL that has succeeded to drop me every day between 10PM-12AM for the last two weeks. The question of day is if FCC should regulate net neutrality. Or, should the question be what has been done in the last ten years to provide Internet service promised ten years ago? Or, have the companies acted in the interests of the country? If this were highways or utilities, there would be no argument.
Progress have been slow and net neutrality is being infringed. Woz is more optimistic than I am.
Effects of long-term recession.
Am I so jaded that I'm cynical about this article about old age? My generation will be the most depressed generation especially if the economy doesn't turn around and we see our retirement funds stagnate.
When another finds no room at the inn or why we should open our eyes and ears. I am always surprised when I hear college students say wealth should not be a goal in life and preach about the sin of wealth. Wealth in any quantification includes a higher education. I wish more compromise could have been made in the Dream Act.
Don't you love it when someone critiques your life choices?

education
I was reading the local paper today and these quotes were in a article said by a high school junior:
"I couldn't get done with taking my tests."
"They wouldn't tell us nothing."
I wasn't sure if I should be more appalled at the student's education system or the paper that published the article.
So, instead of buying that one additional toy that will only give you pleasure for 5 minutes, why not invest in furthering someone's education. Help Americans speak English better.

debt
If you had turned on C-SPAN this weekend, you might have caught the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility & Reform Meeting where they failed to get the 14 votes out of 18 (they got 11) to push the recommendations to a vote in Congress. The jaded among us knew nothing would come out of it as even the members of the commission reflected, not when there was a tax cut bill in Congress.
History will show how leaders in the early 21st century did not have the courage to make good long-term decisions about the debt in the longest recession (or longest period with the slowest growth, somebody needs to think of a term). And, how my generation did nothing but vent about it.

python
My first impression of Python is wow, this is a great beginner programming language. The tutorial is pretty good though like all programming guides emphasizes too much on detail that beginners don't need in the beginning (too much on the interpreter when all I want to get to is hello world).
I can see the attraction from nonprogrammers. The language is pretty intuitive and responsive. I can even see people transitioning from Excel if they use alot of functions and scripts.
It's so easy that I could see introducing this language to sixth graders who had a predilection to programming.

free
So, I have some free time now and thought I would finally get to Python. I need some outlet for my creative juices. I wish I had a better computer to install the program.
On other things, I have been looking around for a good hand-held defense tool like a pepper stray. Due to the growing crime in my area and the feeling that I get that my community isn't proactive enough about protection, I started researching about good defense tools that might be easy to use. I found this product called the Tornado which incorporates all three: sound, pepper, and light.
