crimson

Why do people even consider such things as blood types? It's a business for people like Peter D'adamo. Though a quack, I learned something about wheat allergens.

stories

As a break from the Olympics, I was watching Undercover Boss. I really enjoyed the episode about 7-Eleven since I love one of their products. I bonded with slurpees while working over summers in college at the beach. My friends understand that I break at 7-Elevens. So, I was glad to see heart-warming stories about the CEO's, Joe DePinto, experiences undercover. So much so, I went to check to see if the company was public which it is not. It is actually owned by a Japanese company. DePinto did a very good job showcasing the values of the company as well as reasons why investment in its future would be profitable. I'm going to go buy a slurpee when I have a chance.

papers

Burning through some historical papers, I wonder if our current fascination with algorithms (for example, Google search) stems from the previous generation's interest in ratios (for example, Kepler). Isn't it all originate from a desire for a sense of order in chaos? I think the healthcare reform's push of evidence-based medicine is an another example of our search for order.

The Supreme Court is doing exactly what the American fathers intended. We bemoan politicians that get bought by money yet, these judges are criticized for making a judgement based on their principles. This story can be (will be, has been) politicized but it's also a good example of balance that is so unique to US politics.

On another note, as I continue to read papers from the WWII era, I can continually astonished by amount of US work in the area of WMD (Anthrax, Ricin). The Manhattan project may have just been the first successful pilot.

quirks

For those not in the science world, quirkiness of Richard Feynman.

Information about the recent Supreme Court ruling on campaign reform (source). Right to free speech is quite different from quantity of free speech allowed. It's safe to say that not every voice is equal nor was it intended to be.

alive

In case you haven't heard the story of the resurrection of the 1918 influenza virus. It's like from Michael Crichton's mind to science.

Blogging does take effort. Any website takes maintenance. However, it's a venue that has given me great satisfaction. At what other time has freedom of speech been so easy to express to others? Blogging has meant the death of the language gatekeepers. Writers, embrace your liberty.
