two cents

I saw that Obama selected Joe Biden as his VP choice. It reminded me a little of JFK's choice of LBJ. Tim Kaine would have made a more interesting choice. I've heard him speak and he does very well with the conservatives. He could have added to the "change" platform. And, he's a governor. Obama's team still lacks the experience or at least the appearance of experience required for national leadership. And, I have to add also they together lack significant military service which is going to hurt in states with a large military presence.

broken usb flash drive

Anyone know how to repair a slightly bent usb flash drive? I leaned slightly on it while studying and now it won't be read by a computer. I know it's time for a new one (yes, I have backups) but does anyone have any helpful suggestions on any fixes?

on the lookout

I've been looking for a external hard drive for a few months now. I'm trying to get the best price for what I need but I find myself wanting more for less. Even when more isn't what is required. Do I really need a terabyte hard drive when all I need maximum is 100GB of space?

I really want Shawn Johnson to win a gold.

Bernie Mac dies and he had sarcoidosis.

The opening ceremony was amazing. My favorite part was the walking above the stadium to light the torch.

I would be remissed to not mention Putin sat calmly by while the conflict in Georgia is going on. Read about the conflict in Georgia.

age bias

What is the appropriate language to address older people? Can you ask for people's age anymore? I met an eminent researcher in his field and I was tempted to ask his age. I do believe people act differently as they approach retirement. They become more honest and do not care very much about the politics or even the social niceties of a situation. Instead, they are willing to let their true feelings show and sometimes the true brilliance or the glimmers of past brilliance comes through. For me, age can be a sign of where they stand in their careers. Are they looking for a final masterpiece or they feeling that their retirement should have been yesterday?

I once used the word "elderly" to an older gentlemen and realized from his expression, he did not like that word. However, different cultures look at age differently. Some cultures truly appreciate the wisdom and humility that often comes with age. Others treat it like the plaque that you cannot escape.

The riders in a race do not stop short when they reach the goal. There is a little finishing canter before coming to a standstill. There is time to hear the kind voice of friends and to say to one's self: "The work is done." - Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.

olympics

Interesting articles in the Economist about the upcoming Olympics. I'd like to emphasize the positive. I'm hoping the Olympics is another coming of age for China.

I see a day when athletes will provide periodic DNA prints to compete in races.
