Brits always have something under their sleeves. I love this Youtube video from their Britain Got Talent. They indeed are gifted!

ingredients

Lots of alcohol, music, passionate people, and politics. My vacation is brewing up to be a wild weekend. I hope we survive. I'll take lots of pictures.

Mourning

China begins three days of mourning. It looks like many Chinese online companies are joining this effort (but, not by choice).

Also, it should be curiously noted that China was able to mobilize in four days (~150,000) about the same number of current US troops in Iraq (~160,000).

should have known better

I was told today that I should have known better. I was supposed to have known to ask about information that wasn't on the piece of paper that I was given. I was expected to ask about information that wasn't in front of me while other information was clearly stated. And, they had the audacity to change the information 10 minutes after I called and not admit it right away. After I told them that I could see that they had changed the document online at a certain time did they confess to the truth. Any web developer knows how to access the file directory. My frustrations with at the registrar's office.

Legalists, I only wish they get to feel their own treatment.

help

Imaginary conversation between China and rest of the world:

Day of Earthquake
ROW: We can help.
China: We are a powerful country. We have money and manpower. We can do this.

Day 1-2 - Growing Need
ROW: We can help.
China: We've got it under control. We are a powerful country. We have money and manpower. We have our pride. We can do this.

Day 3 - Critical Need
ROW: We can help.
China: We might need a little expertise.

This is very similar to working with any Chinese person on a project.

Day of cyclone and beyond:
ROW: We can help.
Myanmar: What damage?

mortgage pain

I was reading a good article about the real estate market. I don't think anything is changing soon.

just words

Fareed Zakaria is one of my favorite journalists. Currently, he is on the cover of Foreign Affairs, Newsweek, and has a new book out. I like him because he is a perpetual optimist. In my world affairs, I have to have some optimism to take the edge out. In his latest well-written essay, he tackles the future of American power. It brings many good points to surface, particularly, about American education and also the value of the American culture. I say he has a very good assessment of the current situation however, he does delve into British history and the current political atmosphere too much.

Zakaria would find the good of a depression but in this case, it may be what U.S. needs to hear right now. He also makes good points on the U.S.'s role overseas and how this will concern its' future.

I highly recommend it.

summer

It's always humbling to be looking through the job ads even when you are not actively looking for a job. I've realize I have a hole in my job skill set, SAS. It doesn't matter if that I have mad skills with Excel and other statistical tools including extensive db experience. SAS is like a magical word. So, I'm making it a summer project to find a copy and learn how to use it. I'm also beginning to assess how I can keep my other job skills sharpened while I pursue my studies. At the end of my studies, I need to find a job. Why does academics and work seem so diametric?

I was recently talking to a department head about what I wanted to do with my degree. He bluntly told me my ideal job might not exist. However, I know that my last position would not have been predicted ten years ago. I hope that I am planning for the job that will exist in the future and hopefully, it fits me.

I'm saying good bye to old dreams and saying hello to new ones.
