french

Due to alot of reading when I was younger, I am more familiar with the monarchies of England and France than my own family tree. French Revolution was a fascination. Maybe the new movie, Marie Antoinette will spark interest in another generation. My perception of her has changed from a history teacher's joke to sympathy for her ill-fated life. France had a monarchy for over 1000 years and it fell within just a few years. It makes me wonder of pattern of events causes nations and kings to rise and fall.

Nobody weaves a better story of these times than Charles Dickens.

internet tv - itv

Just wondering if the studio executives are considering solely Internet viewers of their shows. This idea came to mind as I was reading news about one of my current favorite shows, Studio 60. I've watched all of Aaron Sorkin's shows and I like his witty dialogue. He sometimes has certain views and ideas that never seem to change however, he also can inspire new thoughts about different issues. He is able to make his audience feel that an idea is much bigger than just words.

Oddly enough, I've been discovering the new shows through the online re'casts on the shows' websites.

On another subject, how do you balance inspiration, vision, and realism? If you speak to a realist, a vision can become a burden instead of an inspiration. Vision has to be shared. One person's vision is a pipe dream; a shared vision can achieve amazing results. Are you more of a visionary or realist?

Hugh Laurie is hilarious.

acquisition value

Lots of mergers and acquistions going on right now. I just recently came across one of my favorite online vendors that has been bought out. Their new site doesn't have all the services I came to expect on the old site. What a let-down. It makes me think of what is the value in an acquistion or how to hold on to that value succesfully.

trend lines

Good lesson to remember, real estate trends occur much slower than other investments. It's also interesting to see that consumer confidence doesn't correspond.

differences

Different Chinas. The protests to oust President Chen Shui-bian in Taiwan gives the world a stark contrast between the two Chinas. They may look the same from the outside but through different growth experiences and world views, these people are starkly differently. The protests have gone on for months and have captured high interest overseas.

opinion

Really. ~sarcasm~

Most Americans don't travel overseas to feel the brunt of the bad and sometimes warped opinions. Now, Americans are alarmed. For every kindness done, it is quickly overshadowed by others' distasteful acts.

Google Checkout. It is perplexing, not only in how Google hopes to make revenue off this tool but also, how this fits in their long-term goals.

The Allerca Lifestyle pet is actually more expensive than my pet. What kind of exotic cat is worth around $5K?

buyout

It's hard to not comment on the YouTube buyout. This company has been burning through cash like it is growing on trees. I haven't seen any proof of a solid revenue model other than selling ad space. The company is built on an open platform that doesn't do a very good job with protecting copyrights. (It raises a question, how can a open system like this keep copyright infringement from occuring.) YouTube also doesn't have the loyalty factor as its continuous crackdowns have proved. Furthermore, it is simply a middle step to how entertainment mediums are evolving. I don't know sure which hole the finance department was drinking when it came up with the number, $1.6 billion.

I love YouTube but it ain't worth that much. I was surprised at how little the physical company size was. It has less than 70 employees. That's very good.

I can't wait to see how it plays out. This is better than TV.

nobel

American Edmund S. Phelps did win the 2006 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences as predicted by WSJ. Interesting theories on why there isn't a Nobel prize for math. I personally like the idea of the jilted boyfriend.

Does anyone else feel that WSJ is like People magazine for financial nerds?

Ouch. HP definitely didn't need this right now. What board allows it to be the news rather the company's products?

new

The new show Heroes reminds me of X-men. I like the storyline and the diversity of characters but I also hate that time flies too fast and I'm left on a cliff hanger each week.

I do like that it's using the show's website to add to the story by using mini comic stories.

How does one target a TV audience who has become more finicky about their choices? Create sufficient buzz on the web and a quality show. If you build it, they will come.
