touch

I've thinking recently of the influence of one. How it is that we underestimate the influence of individuals in group decisions. And that often decisions are made due to one strong opinion or over one strong opinion.

Teachers demonstrate the influence of one. I've had many teachers who have touched me along the way but recently, I met one of my old teachers again. She was my 11th grade English teacher. In 10th grade English, no matter what I did, I could not get above a C on any of my papers. I remember thinking that English was the most horrible class. Yet, in 11th grade, everything changed. It might have been her can-do attitude toward her students. Maybe, it was due to the fact that she offered opportunities to do well and gain back my confidence. I started getting good grades in her class. By the year end, I had been recommended into AP English and later that allowed me to be exempted from my college Freshman English classes. In college, though not required, I took extra English classes.

I recently met her at the airport. She looked familiar and I introduced myself. I felt the need to share with her the impact she had made in my academic life. So, through the jostling of getting into the plane, I shared with her what she had done in my life. At the end of the flight, as I was rushing to my next flight, she again was there to encourage me.

I believe it's important for people to understand the impact of the decisions they make. It can change their behavior and who knows who else will feel its cascading effects.
