break even
I like hybrids but anyone getting a hybrid for cost savings should be aware of the break even point. The Toyota Prius's break even point is getting better, but no more tax savings.

risk
Risk of doing business overseas, Chad.
Definition of a public figure is changing. Any senior executive now has alot of information on the web for any current or future employee to see.

no more
Pluto isn't a planet anymore. Thanks to the astronomers around the world, at least three generations will be confused about what is or isn't a planet. Pluto, you will always be a planet in our eyes. Who cares whose orbit you pass? The astronomers are still working on the number of planets. Read all about Pluto at Wikipedia.

always on
CNN has discovered YouTube. Media attention is not always a good thing for its regular users.
I've been singing the same old song for several years now. TV isn't quite like TV anymore.
Ouch. AOL's CTO probably never even touched the data or the sytem. Yet, he was responsible for the information. Welcome to the world of privacy concerns. Do senior managers prepare for the day that they make that tragic flaw or does it jump on them without notice?

lasting
Developers who don't bother to test on other platforms should be sent back to school. I'm tired of finding web applications that don't work properly on Firefox.
With that in mind, I believe that it's not what you create but how long it stays usable whether that is a process, program, or system. Change always comes quickly but it's satisfying to know that your work can adapt or assimilate to those changes.

strength in diversity
Prejudice goes deeper than what we can see. It's difficult for anyone to accept someone who is different from them, even more so to appreciate their difference. People's mindsets are hardened early in life and most people are blind to their own prejudices. I find as I grow older that despite our changing world, prejudices are more prevalent than ever. I think we have just become better at covering them up. It's difficult to say that I am different than you but together we can be stronger than each of us individually. I like companies like PepsiCo and Nissan who are willing to take a risk. These boards may find they are the ones who are acting more risk averse.
On another topic, I'm curious to see what Sears will do next.

workplaces
One of my friends sent me another email about workplaces. It was again about another employee who didn't like their workplace. It's still hard for me to understand the attitude of a person who hates their job. Or, the environment where seniority alone leads to promotions. Who would like to manage such people or work under them? In reflecting about my first managerial position, I realize if your employee doesn't want you as a reference, you probably had managerial issues. A manager should desire that employees work to their best and most of the times that means well-suited to their positions.

touch
I've thinking recently of the influence of one. How it is that we underestimate the influence of individuals in group decisions. And that often decisions are made due to one strong opinion or over one strong opinion.
Teachers demonstrate the influence of one. I've had many teachers who have touched me along the way but recently, I met one of my old teachers again. She was my 11th grade English teacher. In 10th grade English, no matter what I did, I could not get above a C on any of my papers. I remember thinking that English was the most horrible class. Yet, in 11th grade, everything changed. It might have been her can-do attitude toward her students. Maybe, it was due to the fact that she offered opportunities to do well and gain back my confidence. I started getting good grades in her class. By the year end, I had been recommended into AP English and later that allowed me to be exempted from my college Freshman English classes. In college, though not required, I took extra English classes.
I recently met her at the airport. She looked familiar and I introduced myself. I felt the need to share with her the impact she had made in my academic life. So, through the jostling of getting into the plane, I shared with her what she had done in my life. At the end of the flight, as I was rushing to my next flight, she again was there to encourage me.
I believe it's important for people to understand the impact of the decisions they make. It can change their behavior and who knows who else will feel its cascading effects.
