ideas
BayBioIMPACT 2005 is a paper on some of ideas arising from Northern California life sciences. We are seeing the birth of another technology movement.
Speaking of movement, French prime minister calls unrest a special movement. I think the Jacobins used the same word.
I'm just tickled and surprised at Microsoft's creativity and cultural understanding. Ready 2005 in Korean (Dick Hardt), translation is provided. I would warn you to turn down the volume. If you scroll down further on Dick's blog, you can find a funny graphic on women and money. Dick's presentation at OSCON is also amusing and educational.
I feel like I've been sleeping for the last couple of years. Coverpop is neat! XML & Flash is my work right now. Any of these gifts will do for me.
Reviewing the cellphone coverpop reminded me of an idea I have about information privacy. Information should only have to follow privacy laws when it exists connected to person's identification. For example, who cares if you have one of the phones listed in cellphone coverpop. Or, who cares that your car title data is public if your name, address isn't known. Data isn't discriminatory as information needs to be.

darfur
Out of all the world's conflicts, it's the ones not on the main stage that worry me. Genocide in Darfur. (Metafilter)
It is as though they didn't care about the basic sanctity of human life. - Friend speaking in reference to an Asian country

theory
I've been thinking of a business concept called competitiveness tempered by generiousity. It's an idea based on that winners continue winning (macroeconomics) and nobody wants to play with a shark (emotional intelligence).
Wow, barcode of life. Now, if these burgers would stay still long enough for us to tag them with RFID (JK). Despite what the founders say, some organisms will die in the DNA extraction process. That's okay, they go to animal heaven. If you lie in media (print, web, audio, video), make it at least a half decent lie.
Speaking of lying, the Oil for Food scandal is making some European companies look they are clueless or blantantly lying. Foreign company employees need to understand the Anti-Bribery statutes set by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. In the U.S. these laws carry fines and jail time.

infinity & beyond
When an analyst starts talking about your stock's price (Google) and infinity, you should know you are at the peak. Here comes the beginning of the end. Though, earning five times what you would have paid for Google stock at IPO is very impressive, but Google's stock has an unrealistic price.
On a side note, I wonder if anyone has studied the correlation between insider trading and stock prices.

managers & leaders
A manager is simply a title. A good manager is someone who understands their people's needs and uses those needs to meet objectives. A good leader is someone whose people doesn't even need to ask about the objectives.
Merck will bounce back. Several people I know worked in one of this company's manufacturing facilities.

systems
People need to understand what a business sytem is. It is simply a system that allows one to do business. It can't be separated. You can't just take care of the system and forget the business and you can't just take care of the business and forget the system. And, don't blame the system for people problems. Don't say, "the system doesn't allow me to do my job." The system can't hurt you. It doesn't care how you do your job. It is simply a tool. And, you can't blame a hammer for not doing your job. So, if you are tempted to say that line, just substitute any other man-made tool and check to see how that sounds. My rant for the day.
Alumni should be allowed to vote about what the school is called. Mason!

gifts
If you haven't already figured it out, your kids and friends would like an XBOX for Christmas. This is like the bb gun in A Christmas Story. "If you loved me, you'll spend $300 for a XBOX."
Hmm...What is Dubai doing? Would you want to live in perpetual beach.

trust
Trust is a daily commodity at work that isn't recognized enough. Miscommunication and conflicts arise not because people are misinformed but because of the lack of trust in the workplace. Non-profits run smoothly in part because that level of trust is expected. Most people don't go in to a hospital thinking someone is going to do them harm. Working with change policies at work, I'm learning that trust is integral to change management. The hard part is that trust is an individual preference and very difficult to manage.
On other things, I have become enthralled Miyazaki's films (Nausicaa and Princess Mononoke). I don't agree with all his messages but I love the way he tells the story. His animations convey story complexity and creativity that definitely is at the genious level. I like Nausicaa the best right now.

horrible service
I called Verizon to check on my order today. They shipped the modem to the wrong address. An incorrect address I had told them about in my last conversation with them. They asked me to call back tomorrow to fix it. BTW, I would have to wait until the end of the month for my order. So, I just cancelled my order.
Like a professor once said, we vote for which companies to survive by our purchases. I say, somebody else can do a better job. As for me, back to Cox I go.
