sims creator

Will Wright does go through high-level ideas like a photographer. He is the T-Rex of information who happened to create a game.

cool flash stuff

I stumbled onto 2nd annual TGSNT last night. It's really amazing what you can do with Flash and how much time these people have.

developer gender

In my six years in the IT industry, I have finally had the chance to work with a woman programmer. In our negotiating classes, we found that women are more likely to be bridge build across cultures and groups. In developers, women are more likely to talk through their problems while men once they find the answer to a particular IT problem want to be left alone. Not all women work like this but when you find women who do, they could potentially be awesome developers.

a life spent

Have you heard about this guy who started chemical warfare, Fritz Haber?

It's amazing to realize how many companies use excel and some kind of query-based tool in their daily business. It's scary yet good for me. It's like finding out about the Wizard of Oz. Then again, I'm even more scared when I find out they don't use the analysis capabilities on their desktop. The Horror.

I just heard a guy go on and on about Service Oriented Architecture(SOA). What a great tool and how long does it take to implement? (sarcasm) Don't underestimate how confusing it can get.

our genes

Alot of good links today.

Genographic Project. Odd, another example of how people see things differently. I was recently in Peru and we were talking about the fact that South America may have been populated by Asians.

gas

Interesting article about gas prices as a percentage of income and historical information.

Gas is still a short-term inelastic product but gas prices will affect leisure products.

Google

Google is still one of my favorite companies. They just released v2.0 of the Google Desktop (Slashdot). I don't like the idea of another browser but I've like v1.0 Google Desktop just fine. It's always about how you use the tool that is important.

Hmm.. MRI detects diabetes. One less prick is always good.

Applications need to consider handling large files. Justin Chapweske's hall of shame. I remember one Access web project that was a nightmare because of db size. Anyways, no growing small company should be on an Access-based application. Developers need to understand the limits of the tools they build.

Neat, Xbox 360 is only $300.

Canada, world’s ninth largest crude oil producer! How high will oil prices go? Hubbert's peak. Geophysicists must be the most optimistic and pessimistic people in the world. China & Oil.

cellophane man

I get so irritated when my idea comes back around with the force of a boomerang. Of course, caching would be a good idea with xml. Why do some developers learn only by experience? Like a great idea couldn't come from anywhere other than their head. Getting a headache jumping from technology to technology. Relearning is such a pain. But, I'm becoming an expert.

Reading an interesting article about Leadership Transformation in Harvard Business Review, April 2005. Somebody put on a survey, a leader is ....one who cracks the whip. Haha...

So neat

Here's two overachievers who invented a tool, SYRIS (Syndrome Reporting Information System), that helps gather and display information about infectious diseases.

Currency and Negotiation

China names currencies in its basket. The currencies are the US dollar, the euro, the yen and the Korean won. Not that they were hard to guess. On the other hand, the currencies gives more information of their level of risk-taking.

I was in Peru recently and had a chance to practice my negotiation skills. At least one of my teammates and I had a lot of fun doing this. But, one technique that I had learned in my class did not go as well as planned (big, small). I'm not sure if it was because of cultural differences or something else. The idea is that once a person concedes on something big, they will concede on the small things. Another one of my teammates noted it's ridiculous to negotiate over couple of sols when elsewhere the prices are much higher but I think negotiation is the fun part. One thing that irritated me was the fact if the vendors knew we were Americans, negotiations always got a little tougher.

Data Overload

MIT's Open Courseware is absolutely amazing. So much information, all in one place. I'm currently reviewing some Operations material on their Sloan School of Management. It amazes me the level of math required to do advanced Operations calculations. No wonder my professors are payed so well in their private endeavors.

now I remember..

I am now remembering why I started taking classes. My brain feels like it's atrophying. There is nothing so delightful as discussing interesting issues in the context of a group. My strategy class last semester was the best. I keep thinking in terms of issues, SWOT, and driving factors.

With that in mind, I don't know how I feel about recent backdown of the Chinese acquisitions. Part of me feels that we as Americans underestimate the Chinese military and economic power. On the other hand, CNOOC had the better finanical offer on the table but maybe not the best management. No matter what, Chinese dragon is definitely waking up. When you play around with a Dragon's tail, you need to becareful of its teeth.
